Resolution Kept With Farrell's




I had been told by my doctor during my yearly physicals for a few years that I was nearing Metabolic syndrome. This is the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke.  Every year he would suggest weight loss, and I would agree.  I would gear up and decide that for my New Year’s Resolution this year, I would tackle my health.  I would get all excited about it during the last week of the year, give it once last hurrah of unhealthy eating on New Year’s Eve and start fresh on January 1st.  The desire was there, but, as with many New Year’s Resolutions, I would not stick to my eating or workout plans much into February.


                           Blog Photo Three                Blog Photo Four After failing with my plan, I took up biking.  This is something I greatly enjoyed and had a goal to ride RAGBRAI that summer, a 400-plus mile ride over the course of 7 days across the state of Iowa.  After completing the ride, I did not put another goal in front of me, and as a result, I gained weight.  By early November, I stepped on a scale and saw a number I had never seen before.  My clothes were tight, I did not sleep well, and I felt uncomfortable most of the time.

On Black Friday weekend in November, I came across a post for the Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping Ten Week Challenge.  Now, at that time I belonged to a local health club, but did not go there very much, so I was intrigued.  I signed up that weekend and got set to start the winter session in early January 2017.  Yes, this was going to be my New Year’s Resolution for 2017!

January 7th arrived, and I stepped into our local Farrell’s Extreme Bodyshaping for the first time for testing.  Not knowing at all what to expect, I was very nervous and felt way out of my element.  I persevered through, got the materials, met with my coach,
and I was out the door ready to return to see what this new adventure would bring.

I came home excited and ready to move forward with the eating and exercise plan.  Admittedly, my wife and daughter, although very supportive, were very skeptical that this would be something I would stick with, as this had been my history.  My meal prep was done for the week, I had looked over the manual, Monday morning came, and I was in the door for my 8:45 class.  My goal was to survive the 10 weeks, to not pass out and have perfect attendance.  I am happy to report, I accomplished all of them, although the first day I did have to sit down for a couple of minutes to catch my breath so I did not pass out!  In fact, I achieved perfect 10-week attendance and have only missed a handful of classes since.

Where am I am now?  Well, I am down 45 lbs.  My body fat is down more than 8%, I am doing more push-ups and sit-ups than ever, and I am seeing muscle definition that I thought was not possible for me.  I am now in my third 10-week session and have a group of 10-Weekers that I am coaching.

The other major change for me has been my nutrition.  Balanced eating has become a way of life for me, as well as choosing healthy foods.   Meal preparation is key.  I do this on the weekends, so I am set for the week ahead, with plenty of healthy meals and snacks.

What has made these changes possible for me?  Honestly, the people at Farrell’s have.  Farrell’s is much different than any health club I have been at.  Farrell’s builds a supportive community around you.  The people, from the managers, instructors and coaches, to the FIT members, are all so encouraging.  Each person wants you to do well and is there to help you accomplish the goal you have set.                  Blog Photo Five_copy

Thanks to our managers, Farrell’s has also challenged me, with member support, to take on other physical challenges such as running events or obstacle course races, both of which I never would have considered in the past.  I have several scheduled for future dates!

I would whole-heartedly recommend Farrell’s to anyone.  There is not a day that goes by that I do not want to come and workout to continue on the road to health that I have been on.  It has been a resolution for 2017 that I have kept and will continue keeping for years long into the future.
