Farrell's Gave Me Back My Closet

I’ve led a fairly athletic life that’s revolved mostly around running. In high school I ran cross-country, track and wrestled. After college I ran my first marathon and followed it up with many half marathons and several 5k – 10k races.

I trained and ran races while pregnant with all three of my kids and then I used running to get my body back as much as I could after each was born.  It worked so well after my first pregnancy that I lost an additional 10 pounds, so when I had my next baby I was in better shape and had less to lose the second time around. However, my third baby was a different story.

That tiny human slowly stole my closet from me while I was pregnant.  She was in cahoots with my stretchy pants to keep me comfortable and dumb until I brought new life into the world.  Comfortable and dumb. Dumb to think that after three babies I could simply run a few miles a day to get back in shape. Once that tiny human was born I thought, “Hey! I get my closet back!” After all, I had done it twice, why not a third time?  Nope, think again.

It wasn’t happening.   From a combination of being too busy and too tired I wasn’t eating well or running as much and the stretchy pants were winning. One by one I lost items of clothing from my closet. Pants still wouldn’t zip and tank tops bulged in weird spots. Most of my clothes were too tight and just plain uncomfortable.  I didn’t like how I looked or how I felt and was beginning to think that this was just my new normal. I had my “before kids” body and now this was my “after kids” body.

In the back of my mind I knew that if I never changed my eating or exercise habits then this would be my new normal. But I didn’t want it to be. Running wasn’t bringing the pounds off so I had to try something new.

My husband and I went to the same high school as Chris Nims, the manager at the Edgewood Road location and we would often see him at races.  I remember when I first heard about how he was doing some crazy workout routine that allowed him a whole day to eat whatever he wanted.  My mind raced with the possibilities of what one could eat if there were no rules for one day.  It felt so backward from the direction that I needed my body to be going in that I forgot about it until that stubborn third baby weight that refused to leave.

For reasons still mostly unknown to me, I decided not only to sign up and spend the money for a 10-week session, but to also sign up for the 6 a.m. class.  Getting up early and spending lots of money on exercising (something I could do for free) didn’t really agree with me.  I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that I needed something to zap my body out of its funk.

After the first kickboxing class I knew I wanted to do that for the rest of my life. Punching and kicking and rock music for 45 minutes, yes please.  Eating every three hours? I can do that! Carbs and proteins? I can do that too! Because of a set of birthday push-ups, I knew that there were people in there at least 20 years older than me and that was amazing. There were people of all ages and shapes and weights in there and we were all doing the same thing. We were taking back our closets!

The year before I started Farrell’s, I donated a lot of my clothes because I gave up.  They would never fit me again. Now, I regret that because I kept a few items and they fit me even better now than before I had kids. During my first ten weeks I lost around 10 lbs. and 3% of my body fat.  But that translated into the loss of my baby gut, which in turn left some fab abs behind. Then over the next two years I lost an additional 20 lbs. and 7.5% more body fat.  I don’t even weight myself a lot anymore because of how I look in the mirror and how my clothes fit.

I now have a collarbone and chiseled shoulders that rock a racer back tank like nobody’s business and I don’t mind having my picture taken. I bought a bikini and got rid of my “mom” swimsuit. I have never eaten so many donuts yet had such a sculpted, muscular body.  Hooray for free days! But you have to earn them by giving your level 10 all week!

Another amazing thing they do at Farrell’s is “before” pictures. Probably the exact opposite reaction everyone else had, but every time I started over in my battle to get in shape I wished I had taken a before picture. Now I had one. Even now over two years later I still look at that “before” picture and I look in the mirror and see a confident, healthy person who doesn’t stress about pounds and calories. It doesn’t matter because the important thing is that I can also look in my closet and see tons of clothes I can wear!  Farrell’s gave my back my closet.
