Kickboxing Class

This class is taught by:

Dan Ranshau

I have been a member of Farrell's since January 2011. Joining was a decision that I made in the Fall after some bad results from a physical. I had let too many years slip by without taking care of my own health. By the end of the 10 weeks, I had lost 22 pounds and with $1000 I won took some of it for a years membership. I am so pleased with how FXB has improved my Life that I became part of the Team. I enjoy being a coach and instructor for Farrell’s because I hope I can motivate other people to have the same Life Changing Success.
Keep a goal or two in front of you so your life continues to move forward.
Big or small they will help keep you accountable and shooting for something.
If your goals are large and will take a long time to reach, set incremental goals to get you there.
That way you can enjoy the progress and celebrate the victories along the way.
NEVER STOP SETTING GOALS FOR YOURSELF!
Leave Your Excuses with yesterday.......
as a Farrel's member there are NO MORE EXCUSES!

Chris Nims

I have been a member of Farrell's since January 2009. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My wife and my brother-in-law also helped with the my decision to join. At the start of the 10 weeks, I made up my mind I was going to give it 100% and get the best 10 week results possible. I have always led a very active life. I have run 3 marathons, along with too many ½ marathons, 8ks, and 5ks to count. I also keep very busy playing in softball and volleyball leagues. My ultimate success came down to bumping up the intensity and cutting down on the portion sizes of my meals. I ate healthy most of the time, but I just ate too much of it. The only way you can be successful with the nutrition plan is to plan ahead, as I did for a week at a time. All the so-called "secrets of success" will not work unless you are diligent about consuming 6 meals per day with lots of water.

My wife was a big part of my transformation. She made me go to class when my motivation was low and did a lot of the cooking that tasted great. By the end of the 10 weeks, I had lost 25 pounds (183 down to 158), got down to 10% body fat, lost inches everywhere, felt better than I ever had before, and was $1000 richer. Everyone has busy lives with jobs and/or kids, but you have to take the time for yourself. I never regret it when I come to class, but I always regret it when I don't. You should be doing this to improve your life. It is supposed to be fun and enjoyable; so if you are going to be in class and take the time to be there, you might as well make the most of it and give 100%. Nobody ever drowned in their own sweat. I enjoy being a coach and instructor for Farrell’s because I hope I can motivate other people to have the same success that I did.

I joined Farrell’s in 2013, after falling out of my normal workout routine. I was just looking for a spark to get back in the grove of things, and didn’t think it would amount to much—boy was I wrong! Joining Farrell’s was by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!! I have belonged to several different gyms, participated in lots of fitness activities, but I have never experienced the total package as I have with Farrell’s. My first 10 weeks were amazing! Not only did I get stronger, but I lost weight, body fat, and inches everywhere. I feel great, have lots of energy, and have met a lot of terrific people! The atmosphere at Farrell’s is so positive and energetic—the coaches, instructors, and FIT members all encourage each other and truly want to see one another succeed. Farrell’s is for all ages and all fitness levels—there is never any judgment. I am very lucky to have found such a great program and group of people. I am passionate, and truly believe in the Farrell’s program, I look forward to sharing my success and hope to motivate others to succeed.
When I am not at Farrell’s I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, Tim, and our dogs, Ginger and Roxie. I also enjoy reading, traveling, golfing, yoga, hanging out with friends & family, and of course cheering on the Hawkeyes as well as the Atlanta Braves.

I joined FXB for the first time in 2010. I convinced a friend to do it with me and we kind of kept to ourselves. I lost about 8 lbs, 4% body fat, and around 10 inches. I decided not to become a FIT member and was convinced I would keep it up on my own. Fast forward to April, 2015; I was the heaviest I had ever been, always tired, criticizing my body every time I got dressed, and pointing out my flaws to my husband. He finally looked at me and said, “To me, you’re perfect, but you are the only person that can do something about the way YOU feel about yourself.” It clicked. Right then and there; this is about ME, my choices, my health, my self-esteem! That day, I passed the Edgewood FXB location on my way home and saw their sign “enrolling now.” That’s it, I thought; let’s do this!
I got home and signed up on-line and my 10 week journey started 3 days later. I was nervous, but determined. This was about ME and I was going to make the most of it. I immediately engaged with those around me. I had a wonderful coach (Jamie, you rock!) who I riddled with questions constantly, introduced myself to new people every day, and asked for tips on my form and nutrition choices (thank you Chris). I was hooked!
After my 10 weeks, I lost a few pounds, several inches, and about 1.5% of my body fat. I realized that my body wasn’t changing at the same rate it was 5 years prior, which made me more focused and committed. The old adage “it’s a marathon, not a sprint,” instantly came to mind and became my motto. I did not make the same mistake twice; this time I signed up as a FIT member and even challenged myself into becoming a resistance bands instructor. I thought I was in pretty good shape, then I started instructing and met a whole new challenge; talking, counting and working out at the same time. ARGH! I love being able to share my excitement and passion with others. One of my greatest accomplishments is having a 10 weeker tell me I helped them stay focused and encouraged them to keep going. That is exactly what I want to do now; I want to push myself and continue to get stronger, but also encourage others to chase their best self!
A few fun wins for me:
1. As a joke, I challenged a male friend to an arm wrestling match. He refused because he said my arms were looking too strong these days.
2. I work at Rockwell, and the walks from the car to my desk are pretty long, so every morning I walk as fast as I can to see how high my heart rate gets.
3. In my first 5 weeks, I stopped drinking coffee (on accident). My body was craving water and I had more natural energy than I have had in years, so I didn’t crave my daily caffeine boost.
4. I was helping put away tables after an event and a gentleman (being very nice) offered to take the table from me and I politely responded, “Oh, I got it,” and proceeded to carry it 50 feet by myself.
5. After week 7 of my 10 weeks, I was able to touch my toes for the first time during the sit and reach stretch after our warmup. I was so excited!
All in all, I have gone down 2 dress sizes, lost 10 lbs, 3.5% body fat, and am no longer complaining about how my clothes fit! I realized that I don’t even think about the way I look anymore because I feel so darn fantastic! This program changed me in the best way possible! I am stronger, more confident, mentally tough, and in the best shape I’ve ever been! I can’t thank the Farrell’s family enough for what they’ve helped me accomplish and I look forward to continuing my journey living life at level 10!

Melissa Mundell

My 10 week session at Farrell’s began in January of 2013, but my Farrell’s journey began earlier. My wife Melissa went through the first 10 week session of 2012. She was hooked fairly quickly and became a FIT member. At the same time, I began my own fitness regimen at home in our basement in front of the TV. And it wasn’t couch potato fitness, it was Insanity. It was a great program and I got into great shape, but it became a grind. I completed 3 sessions of Insanity (9 weeks each) in 2012 and towards the end it was difficult to stay motivated. Not to mention the wear I was causing to our basement carpet. Meanwhile, Melissa was having a great time with her new Farrell’s family. I got to know many of these amazing people by extension and so it was only a matter of time before I joined the party!

In December of 2012, after some strong encouragement (and a few beers) I agreed to give it a shot. I loved Farrell’s right away. There is no substitute for working out in a group setting. The Farrell’s team is so positive and they want to see you succeed! I love the variety; no two classes are the same. There is a social aspect to Farrell’s that is important to its success and you quickly find that there are a number of other people with similar goals and interests. Getting to know fellow 10 weekers and FIT members helps to keep you accountable to the program and on track towards reaching your goals.

I have always been health conscious. I have followed many different exercise plans and diets. At the end of my 10 weeks I was in the best shape of my life and it has been a joy for me to remain a part of the Farrell’s team.

Joe Tesar

I joined in the summer of 2013. I always tried to be active with softball and farming. The only problem was that I would eat what ever I wanted and it really didn’t help staying active. I wasn’t able to lose or even control my weight. I always seemed to make a joke about my weight and always seemed to just shrug off about my size until I actually realized what number was on the scale! It was time for a change! My sister had done the previous session and had great results and plus, not wanting to be outdone by my sister both me and my wife joined fxb and started this amazing journey! I wondered how in just 45 minutes a day and with no special health junk to eat how was my body really going to transform like they said it would! Well, I was in for a shock because with following the nutrition plan and working out every day for the first 5 weeks I had dropped 30 lbs. and many inches off of my body! Boy, was I far from being done because in the whole ten weeks I dropped a total of 60 lbs and almost 30 inches in total. When I finished the 10 weeks I knew I had made a good transformation but was still shocked when my name was called as the thousand dollar winner! I was so happy that I even emailed my high school wrestling coach to tell him that I won and how much I had changed! By listening to my instructors, coaches, and other fit members I had succeeded! I knew I wanted to give back right away because Farrell's has given me so much I wanted to return the favor! It's such a big part of my wife's and my life that I'd be lost without going there every day! It's my morning cup of coffee! Everyone there is like my extended family and that's what makes this place worth being a part of. Without it I'd hate to guess how much time I would have taken off my life! I feel great and look great both mentally and physically! I love hitting my level 10 and helping everyone else hit their level 10 as well. Farrell's gave me the tools to succeed and I just want to pass the torch to others to have the same results that I did.

I began Farrell's in the spring of 2011 with my husband. Prior to Farrell's my weight had always been up and down (more often up than down). The 2 years before I had my first daughter I was running 3-5 miles daily and considered myself in the best shape I had ever been in. Making time to exercise with 1 baby was tough, but 2 years later after my 2nd daughter was born, I couldn't . seem to get motivated at all to work out. When she was 9 months old and I still had baby weight to lose, I decided to give Farrell's a try. I knew a few people that were in the program and I only heard great things. My goal at the time was to simply lose those last pounds of baby weight I was struggling to get off. After 1 week I knew that FXB was something I loved (regardless of how sore I was) and that I would definitely continue after my 10 weeks. I was very pleased with my 10-week testing results, but knew I still wanted to accomplish more! I began instructing in January 2012 and coaching 10-week members that summer. I love being able to share my passion for such a great program with others. After being an FXB FIT member for over a year, I am still setting goals, working hard to accomplish them and seeing results. FXB is much more than losing weight: I became stronger (mentally and physically), I am in the best shape of my life, and I have the knowledge how to incorporate a great nutrition plan into my busy lifestyle. Farrell's has only changed my family's life for the better and everyday I still look forward to the challenge that class will bring!

I grew up in Cedar Rapids and was excited at the idea of moving back from Des Moines to open a Farrell's eXtreme Bodyshaping location. In June 2007 the Boyson Road location opened and we have since grown to a total of 5 locations in Eastern Iowa. Farrell’s is a program that has helped thousands of people and I’m proud to be a part of it. Our managers, coaches and instructors really set us apart. I can’t imagine a more rewarding way to spend my day!

Prior to Farrell's I was in Human Resources management and recruiting. Now I focus on all things Farrell’s; instructing, working with our team and day to day operations.

When I'm not at Farrell's you can find me cheering on our sons' at their many activities or maybe even running a race with them! We have four boys, ages 13, 11, 9 and 6.

Member Since: April 2014
The reason I started Farrell's: To get some much needed "me" time. As a mom to 3 young kids, I don't get a lot of time to myself. I'm also self-employed so I don't have a true start and stop to my day.
My favorite part of being an instructor: Challenging each person and motivating them to do it for themselves!
My favorite combo is: Jab, cross, hook!
My favorite muscle group is: Shoulders
My favorite combo is: Jab, cross, hook!
My favorite music: Alternative, Hip hop and oldies rock!

I started my Farrell’s 10 week challenge in October 2014. My wife had to talk me into doing the challenge with her (I have to admit, it was a good idea). This required us to make our fitness a top priority and get into a routine to make it work. Once our routine was established, all we had to do was show up. Once the workout starts, the instructors and other students motivate and engage the class making you WANT to perform at level 10. Before I knew it class was over, I’d be drenched in sweat and felt like I really accomplished something for myself. The diet took some getting used to also, but it’s really turned into a habit for me to prepare my meals ahead of time and make good decisions about my food.

It was exciting to see the positive changes during the first few weeks and by the time I was done with the 10 week challenge, I was very happy with my results. I definitely did not want to go back to my old ways, so my wife and I signed up for 3 more months, and then for a full year after that. Since the 10 week challenge, I’ve continued to make great improvements. I’m feeling and looking better than I’d ever imagined I would! Now it is truly something I look forward to daily- it’s a break from everything. It’s helped me to get into the best shape I’ve ever been in, reduce my stress and boost my confidence. Now I’m hoping to pay it forward and make a difference in someone else’s fitness journey!

Farrell's sets the tone for my day. If I can't get my workout in before going to work, my whole day is off. It's the one place I can go and work out my frustrations and leave it all behind me.
I love the family atmosphere of Farrell's. It's a place where people go work out and not be judged, People are always welcoming and supportive--they genuinely care about you. Lots of great friendships have been made here.

Deidre Nims

I started Farrell’s with my husband in Jan 2009 as a way to help find my pre-pregnancy body and get into a consistent routine of working out again. Between a full-time job, raising a 3-year old and newborn, housework, and breast feeding, life had never been so chaotic. To keep my sanity, I needed to get some stability, relieve some stress, and get lean again. Mission accomplished. I’ve been a competitive athlete my entire life, but Farrell’s takes self-discipline, determination, and perseverance to another level. Every day you have the choice to challenge your body to push through weakness and doubt, and I embrace that challenge to the depths of my soul.
This is a cardio kickboxing class.
